Beach holidays in Versilia

As you might expect from a Tuscan holiday destination, Versilia is a particularly beautiful part of Italy that also has a somewhat glamorous reputation thanks to the local celebrities who holiday in the region.

Its great food, white sand beaches - which run from Bocca di Magra almost to the Arno - and rugged countryside are also a draw, as is its good mix of lively and quiet resorts.

Some of the main beach holiday destinations to consider in Versilia include:

Forte dei Marmi

Forte dei Marmi was one of the first resorts to be founded in Italy has some great sandy beaches. It’s one of the more high-profile locations in Versilia, having entertained everyone from Michelangelo to the Abramovich family.

The beach in Viareggio welcomes all holidaymakers - young travellers, couples and families - making for a lively atmosphere that’s also traditionally Italian. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to choose from, as well as activities like beach volleyball and attractions such as Art Nouveau architecture if you want to go for a walk around the city.

This is a modern seaside resort with a soft sand beach backed by pine trees and, further in the distance, the backdrop of the Apuan Alps. There are also numerous museums, sculptures and exhibitions dedicated to the local product, white marble.

Marina di Massa

Marina di Massa is best known for organising a farewell ceremony complete with fireworks for departing tourists at the end of the season. This is a quiet resort for the Versilia region, making it ideal for families. The pier is 700 ft long and is a great place to go for excellent views when the skies are clear.

Marina di Pietrasanta

This resort has a lovely 5 km beach and plenty of other attractions nearby, including the Church of San Martino, the Bruno Antonuci Archaeology Museum and the Rocca di Sala and Guinigi Palace, which was rebuilt in the 14th century.
